A question and a request
ElNando888: Hi Diana, I have a question about the dimensioning of this server. I'm curious to know how much hard disk space and how much bandwidth is allocated. The point is to gauge whether we may someday upload large materials like videos, or if this server is meant to stay text + pictures only.

And I'd have a request. I'm not sure if you already noticed, but I'm trying to initiate group interactivity on this wiki. There's still not much happening, but I'll keep insisting (at least for a while) in the hope that new users will join the wiki, at first only to participate to the group's activities, and hopefully, with time, they would get confident enough to edit and maintain more general parts of the wiki. So here the request: could you please activate subpages under the main namespace ? I can create subpages on my user page, but not on the group's page (because it's in the main namespace, and subpages are disabled by default in the main namespace) ? Or is there any reasons for this feature to stay disabled ?

Thanks, Nando

----

DianaBK: Hi, nando. This server space is enough to store such large data. But as you know, this wiki has very simple function now. That's why you couldn't create your group. At the first time, we just planned to build up simple wiki, and then add on modules when users request or need. Do you think creating group is needed to our wiki?

Thanks, Diana

----

It all depends on the policies that the EteRNA staff wants to define. Assuming current definitions, which I didn't find anywhere, it would seem that anyone may create a group-related page, like I did for The Spiral. I can't say if it would be wise to create a separate Group namespace. Maybe so, but is it worth the effort ?

All I can say is that it cannot hurt to have some group interactivity on the wiki. For one, it could very well spare the EteRNA dev team resources, since they wouldn't need to implement more group-related functions on the EteRNA site itself. And second, it would bring around a number of players, and some of them may start contributing to the non-group-related sections of the wiki. So, I think that favoring group interaction on the wiki would be good.

For the groups' pages not to be spread all over the place, some tools are needed. I created a category, for one. But the ability to create subpages would be certainly useful. And for that, we need either a separate namespace, or that subpages are activated in the Main namespace.

Video embeds
ElNando888: Hi, in case we won't be able to host videos directly on the server, it would probably be useful to have an extension that allows us to embed videos.

Thanks :)

DianaBK: Yes, you're right. Uploading mass media like video, pdf, ppt are not allowed now because we thought that users would just upload simple images as before the wiki. But, it looks useful, so I'll make it as soon as possible. Thanks.

----

Hi Diana,

I don't think embedding directly will ever work. The extension EmbedVideo 1.0 seems to work perfectly fine in another wiki I just visited. The webmaster of that wiki seems to have had issues when he was using MediaWiki 1.20.2 or earlier in the 1.20.x series. Now his site is using 1.20.4 and everything is fine...

I would suggest to upgrade MediaWiki to 1.20.5 (we have 1.20.0 here)

Spam
Hi Diana,

Maybe we need to extend the countermeasures... something like http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SpamBlacklist ?

I've been browsing the MediaWiki help pages for a solution to a problem that will arise when this wiki finally gets stanford.edu and cmu.edu host names. Some players may want to keep using their preferred domain name, and we will need some form of "magic" to create links that can adapt to both. I believe that following extension will help solve the problem.

Suggestion
Hi again,

Hello Diana, if I may, I think it's time for me to suggest that you make me a sysop on this wiki. To be honest, I was hoping that other worthy contributors would show up, but so far, I believe that I'm the only one who would qualify for what is described on http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Assigning_permissions

Another player (hoglahoo) just joined and we had a chat. I must admit, I agree with him about the interface being quite uncomfortable. The contrast between the dark blue areas and the pure white background of the contents is very hard on the eyes. Not to mention the nearly invisible personal links on the top of the page (dark blue over dark blue). It is hard enough to get people to visit, not to mention about getting them to contribute. An uninviting interface is clearly a problem...

The level of spamming has increased lately (it's the third time that I'm blanking the page of that Ezra spammer), and you are very busy with other tasks... This seems like a reasonable choice, specially considering that it can be reverted any time you want.

None of us can do anything about this. Only sysops (admins) have access to the styling of these areas. I believe it would be important to make some changes, or at least to discuss them.

For an example of possible look and feel, try to install Stylish (extension for Firefox and Chrome) and apply EteRNA Wiki - Blue

Hi Nando, sorry for late response. Really glad to hear the suggestion from you! Sure, but I can give you sysop rights partially (only deleting/ moving page and blocking user) for now. I'll let you know when I'm done. Hope that you would understand this circumstances. And if someone you know are interested in managing this site with us, please let me know. At the end, I very appreciate your involvement all the time, deep concern about this wiki as well. Thanks!

Not a report, not an issue. It's just something I don't see expressed much (maybe I'm not looking at the right places). I saw today all the issues you added to the GitHub tracker, and it all seems so cold and ungrateful... I know for certain that it wasn't the intention of the people reporting those issues, so I just wanna say that I, and many other players, are really so pleased and so very impressed by the work done on the new web interface for the labs. We're all appreciative for all the work done, thank you :)

Hi nando, I got your point. Actually this theme color matches with our eteRNA web site.
If you're using Chrome or Firefox, you could try to install the Stylish extension, and then to apply this stylesheet I composed myself. I tried to match the palette in use on EteRNA... To me, it doesn't matter if we go all white or all dark-blue, but I think it's important that we try to be consistent.

Hi there, I'd like to third the gratitude. I didn't realize what a small dev team was behind EteRNA when the players requested help with organizing issue reporting. Now that I understand this fact, and also that you have the HTML efforts on your plate in addition to the wiki, I will take this into account in arranging the issue intake protocol. It is my fault that such an enormous list of issues was compiled, and I hope it reflects the enthusiasm and passion that the players have for this game, as opposed to dissatisfaction.

-- ElNando888 (talk) 13:02, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

If anything, this was the short list of player wishes! I didn't even have time to organize all the incoming requests, much less actually help fix them, as is now on your plate, lol. I know how hard it is to push out a major update, and I want to reinforce that the players in general support the movements toward an HTML interface out of Flash. And there is not an expectation of feature change so much as an appreciation that we can have the conversation, and prioritize our efforts to maximum positive effect.

My intention is to relieve and organize the chaotic nature of communication between devs & players, so as to make the devs' lives easier, and to educate the players as to proper intake protocol. So I hope that what currently may seem like an ungrateful onslaught of complaints actually becomes a more organized and easier to sift through protocol that the devs and players can collaborate on with minimal consternation.

Many thanks for your efforts!

Dear all,

First of all, I'm so impressed, and thankful to you and all Eterna players.

Nando, Omei - Thank you for your evolvement in wiki… Without your help, we could not manage wiki effectively... Machinelves - I really appreciate you drawing up the list. It is quite straightforward and informative, so it could help us organize and remind issues. Let's keep collecting and prioritizing them with other players. With respect to the protocol which you mentioned, we'll discuss this friday.

Nowadays, I've stayed away from jobs for two weeks due to personal issue. So, I couldn't piling up reported issues. I'm so sorry that players had such inconvenient issues, we are figuring out how to fix them.

It is not related to issues, but I would like to say that Eterna and you players are really important to me. I hope we would satisfy your needs, also help you more effectively. Until then, We'll keep doing our best.

Love all, and thanks again for your time and consideration.

If I understand correctly the documentation of that extension, it shouldn't be more complicated than just adding those elements in the $wgExt_valid_elements variable in LocalSettings.php

Thanks!

Change notifications seem to be broken
I stopped getting email notifications of changes to pages on my watch list since 10/11/13. I've checked my watch list, preferences and spam folders, and can't find anything on my end to explain it.

I think I spoke too soon. It certainly isn't completely broken, and I probably was just mistaken about what pages were on my watch list.

I would like to second that. Thank you, Diana.
