== WIKI PROBLEMS == Please report all problem of eteRNA's WIKI

== A question and a request ==

ElNando888: Hi Diana, I have a question about the dimensioning of this server. I'm curious to know how much hard disk space and how much bandwidth is allocated. The point is to gauge whether we may someday upload large materials like videos, or if this server is meant to stay text + pictures only.

And I'd have a request. I'm not sure if you already noticed, but I'm trying to initiate group interactivity on this wiki. There's still not much happening, but I'll keep insisting (at least for a while) in the hope that new users will join the wiki, at first only to participate to the group's activities, and hopefully, with time, they would get confident enough to edit and maintain more general parts of the wiki. So here the request: could you please activate subpages under the main namespace ? I can create subpages on my user page, but not on the group's page (because it's in the main namespace, and subpages are disabled by default in the main namespace) ? Or is there any reasons for this feature to stay disabled ?

Thanks, Nando

DianaBK: Hi, nando. This server space is enough to store such large data. But as you know, this wiki has very simple function now. That's why you couldn't create your group. At the first time, we just planned to build up simple wiki, and then add on modules when users request or need. Do you think creating group is needed to our wiki?

Thanks, Diana

It all depends on the policies that the EteRNA staff wants to define. Assuming current definitions, which I didn't find anywhere, it would seem that anyone may create a group-related page, like I did for The Spiral. I can't say if it would be wise to create a separate Group namespace. Maybe so, but is it worth the effort ?

All I can say is that it cannot hurt to have some group interactivity on the wiki. For one, it could very well spare the EteRNA dev team resources, since they wouldn't need to implement more group-related functions on the EteRNA site itself. And second, it would bring around a number of players, and some of them may start contributing to the non-group-related sections of the wiki. So, I think that favoring group interaction on the wiki would be good.

For the groups' pages not to be spread all over the place, some tools are needed. I created a category, for one. But the ability to create subpages would be certainly useful. And for that, we need either a separate namespace, or that subpages are activated in the Main namespace.

== Video embeds ==

ElNando888: Hi, in case we won't be able to host videos directly on the server, it would probably be useful to have an extension that allows us to embed videos.

Thanks :)

DianaBK: Yes, you're right. Uploading mass media like video, pdf, ppt are not allowed now because we thought that users would just upload simple images as before the wiki. But, it looks useful, so I'll make it as soon as possible. Thanks.

== Problems with parser tags ==

Hi, there seems to be an incompatibility between parser tags like <gallery>, and the Tiny MCE editor

If I understand correctly the documentation of that extension, it shouldn't be more complicated than just adding those elements in the $wgExt_valid_elements variable in LocalSettings.php

== Footnotes ==

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite/Cite.php or an equivalent extension would be nice to have.

== Jmol applet ==

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Jmol would be very nice too.

Just to give an idea of the kind of stuff I'd like to author with it :

http://www.proteopedia.org/wiki/index.php/Beta-Prime_Subunit_of_Bacterial_RNA_Polymerase#Tutorial:_.CE.B2.E2.80.99_Subunit_of_Thermus_thermophilus_RNAP
or
http://www.proteopedia.org/wiki/index.php/TRNA#Modified_nucleotides
(isn't that totally awesome ?)

Thanks in advance.

DianaBK: As I said you, it looks so great. So, we'll add Jmol plugin to our wiki. Thank you for your idea! :)

== ParserFunctions extension ==

Hi Diana,

I've been browing the MediaWiki help pages for a solution to a problem that will arise when this wiki finally gets a stanford.edu and cmu.edu host names. Some players may want to keep using their preferred domain name, and we will need some form of magic to create links that can adapt to both. I believe that following extension will help solve the problem.

== Global look and feel ==

Hi again,

Another player (hoglahoo) just joined and we had a chat. I must admit, I agree with him about the interface being quite uncomfortable. The contrast between the dark blue areas and the pure white background of the contents is very hard on the eyes. Not to mention the nearly invisible personal links on the top of the page (dark blue over dark blue). It is hard enough to get people to visit, not to mention about getting them to contribute. An uninviting interface is clearly a problem...

None of us can do anything about this. Only sysops (admins) have access to the styling of these areas. I believe it would be important to make some changes, or at least to discuss them.

For an example of possible look and feel, try to install Stylish (extension for Firefox and Chrome) and apply EteRNA Wiki - Blue
