The chemical structure of theophylline.

Theophylline is a xanthine derivative found in tea leaves, cocoa beans and prepared synthetically; its salts and derivatives act as smooth muscle relaxants, central nervous system and cardiac muscle stimulants, and bronchodilators.

As a member of the xanthine family, it bears structural and pharmacological similarity to caffeine.
