Hi Nando, thank you for your contribution to wiki! all the pages you mentioned were deleted. Thanks!  -Diana

Thank you Diana. -- ElNando888 (talk) 09:18, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Is ther any way to mark these deleted pages so they don't show under wanted articles? --LFP6 (talk) 00:56, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Seems that was already fixed. LFP6 (talk) 23:21, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Email notification options

Thanks, Diana, for the default search change.  I have another request.  I'm typically working on multiple projects at the same time, and each has their own set of tools.  I rely on email notification to keep me abreast of changes I might not otherwise notice for a long time.  Could you enable the $wgEnotifWatchlist setting, so that I can in turn set my preferences to get emails for changes to pages on my watch list?

While you are at it, you might enable the $wgEnotifUserTalk and $wgEnotifMinorEdits settings as well.  But if you are trying to keep things as simple as possible for casual users, I can make do fine with just $wgEnotifWatchlist.

Thanks in advance.

Omei (talk) 20:00, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Omei, thanks for your idea! I enabled all settings, so you can take any options in "my preferences". Please refer to below:

To change your e-mail notification settings, visit

Standard search box configuration

Hi, Diana.  Nando and I were talking about how it isn't currently easy to find anything in pages in the User namespace. It seems changing the configuration of the default search to include the User space would be good.  I've never configured MediaWiki myself, but it looks like the $wgNamespacesToBeSearchedDefault variable should do the trick.  Can you try that out?  TIA.

Omei (talk) 19:47, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Omei, Thanks for your contribution to eterna wiki and sorry for any inconvenience you had. The problem you mentioned has been fixed. If you have any further problem, please let us know. Thanks!

Red links

Currently, the red links have a 'workbranch_main' inside the URL.

Problem with recent software changes

Hi Diana, It seems TinyMCE doesn't always load properly after the changes you recently made. For instance, go to any page, click Edit, then click Show Preview, and the TinyMCE is gone...

-- ElNando888 (talk) 09:50, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

... and there seems to be problems with pages edited posterior to those changes, like here, the wiki formatting doesn't seem to "kick in" :/

-- ElNando888 (talk) 10:57, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

... trying an edit (after I purged the page)

-- ElNando888 (talk) 18:47, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

content is unformatted again...

-- ElNando888 (talk) 18:48, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

ok, editing a last time for you to see, Diana. You see the page the way it is now ? now, in the URL, just add ?action=purge

That should fix it until the next edit. We cannot really afford this king of problems. Casual contributors are rare, but if they face a completely unformatted page after editing and fixing a typo, there's just no way they are going to try again and contribute more. This is bad.

-- ElNando888 (talk) 18:57, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Nando, I got your messages and fixed it related with problems. I'm installing and updating softwares we needed, so turned off tinymce editor because this editor didn't make some applications enable. Anyway, sorry for the problems, I forgot to turn it on! Thanks!

-- DianaBK

...and where is the URL? add?action=purge. I couldn't find it. Thanks always, nando!

Thanks Diana, it seems everything is back to normal. And thanks for adding those extensions, gonna be cool :)

Global look and feel

Hi again,

Another player (hoglahoo) just joined and we had a chat. I must admit, I agree with him about the interface being quite uncomfortable. The contrast between the dark blue areas and the pure white background of the contents is very hard on the eyes. Not to mention the nearly invisible personal links on the top of the page (dark blue over dark blue). It is hard enough to get people to visit, not to mention about getting them to contribute. An uninviting interface is clearly a problem...

None of us can do anything about this. Only sysops (admins) have access to the styling of these areas. I believe it would be important to make some changes, or at least to discuss them.

For an example of possible look and feel, try to install Stylish (extension for Firefox and Chrome) and apply EteRNA Wiki - Blue

-- ElNando888 (talk) 23:10, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

DianaBK :

Hi nando, I got your point. Actually this theme color matches with our eteRNA web site. Do you think this is needed to be simpler and more white for gathering people? If so, I need to discuss about style with other developers. Good to hear that hoglahoo came and join :) WELCOME!

 - Diana

If you're using Chrome or Firefox, you could try to install the Stylish extension, and then to apply this stylesheet I composed myself. I tried to match the palette in use on EteRNA... To me, it doesn't matter if we go all white or all dark-blue, but I think it's important that we try to be consistent.

ParserFunctions extension

Hi Diana,

I've been browsing the MediaWiki help pages for a solution to a problem that will arise when this wiki finally gets stanford.edu and cmu.edu host names. Some players may want to keep using their preferred domain name, and we will need some form of "magic" to create links that can adapt to both. I believe that following extension will help solve the problem.

Jmol applet

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Jmol would be very nice too.

Just to give an idea of the kind of stuff I'd like to author with it :

http://www.proteopedia.org/wiki/index.php/Beta-Prime_Subunit_of_Bacterial_RNA_Polymerase#Tutorial:_.CE.B2.E2.80.99_Subunit_of_Thermus_thermophilus_RNAP
or
http://www.proteopedia.org/wiki/index.php/TRNA#Modified_nucleotides
(isn't that totally awesome ?)

Thanks in advance.

-- ElNando888 (talk) 13:27, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

DianaBK: As I said you, it looks so great. So, we'll add Jmol plugin to our wiki. Thank you for your idea! :)

Video embeds

ElNando888: Hi, in case we won't be able to host videos directly on the server, it would probably be useful to have an extension that allows us to embed videos.

Thanks :)

DianaBK: Yes, you're right. Uploading mass media like video, pdf, ppt are not allowed now because we thought that users would just upload simple images as before the wiki. But, it looks useful, so I'll make it as soon as possible. Thanks.

Hi Diana,

I don't think embedding directly will ever work. The extension EmbedVideo 1.0 seems to work perfectly fine in another wiki I just visited. The webmaster of that wiki seems to have had issues when he was using MediaWiki 1.20.2 or earlier in the 1.20.x series. Now his site is using 1.20.4 and everything is fine...

I would suggest to upgrade MediaWiki to 1.20.5 (we have 1.20.0 here)

A question and a request

ElNando888: Hi Diana, I have a question about the dimensioning of this server. I'm curious to know how much hard disk space and how much bandwidth is allocated. The point is to gauge whether we may someday upload large materials like videos, or if this server is meant to stay text + pictures only.

And I'd have a request. I'm not sure if you already noticed, but I'm trying to initiate group interactivity on this wiki. There's still not much happening, but I'll keep insisting (at least for a while) in the hope that new users will join the wiki, at first only to participate to the group's activities, and hopefully, with time, they would get confident enough to edit and maintain more general parts of the wiki. So here the request: could you please activate subpages under the main namespace ? I can create subpages on my user page, but not on the group's page (because it's in the main namespace, and subpages are disabled by default in the main namespace) ? Or is there any reasons for this feature to stay disabled ?

Thanks, Nando

DianaBK: Hi, nando. This server space is enough to store such large data. But as you know, this wiki has very simple function now. That's why you couldn't create your group. At the first time, we just planned to build up simple wiki, and then add on modules when users request or need. Do you think creating group is needed to our wiki?

Thanks, Diana

It all depends on the policies that the EteRNA staff wants to define. Assuming current definitions, which I didn't find anywhere, it would seem that anyone may create a group-related page, like I did for The Spiral. I can't say if it would be wise to create a separate Group namespace. Maybe so, but is it worth the effort ?

All I can say is that it cannot hurt to have some group interactivity on the wiki. For one, it could very well spare the EteRNA dev team resources, since they wouldn't need to implement more group-related functions on the EteRNA site itself. And second, it would bring around a number of players, and some of them may start contributing to the non-group-related sections of the wiki. So, I think that favoring group interaction on the wiki would be good.

For the groups' pages not to be spread all over the place, some tools are needed. I created a category, for one. But the ability to create subpages would be certainly useful. And for that, we need either a separate namespace, or that subpages are activated in the Main namespace.

-- ElNando888 (talk) 13:02, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi nando, thanks for sharing your idea. I saw new group named "Teen Science" in this wiki :) As far as I understand about mediawiki, there are several options for group. But I'm not quite sure, so need to look into them. I might be busy mainly working on new features of lab browser by next week, so I'll handle it right after finishing them. This issue is added in our issue tracker (#347). you can check what's happening on there. Thanks :)

-- Diana

Hi Diana, I thought you already had made a rather important change by allowing subpages in the main namespace, which allows groups to handle their "stuff" under one roof. At this point, and even though another group has (finally) created a page, it doesn't seem very urgent to investigate the better options in the context of a Mediawiki. The lab browser is clearly more important. In any case, thanks :)

-- ElNando888 (talk) 19:26, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

I actually created the page for my group... See wher that goes. :) I would like to be able to have a "group only" page, maybe requiring a password or admin approval? That way, for example, if you have a group puzzle in the works, you could have the latest design right there, and such. Would that be feasable? Thanks. LFP6 (talk) 17:31, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

@LFP6: in my eyes, one important argument in favor of group pages on the wiki was that it was precisely not possible to create privately held informations in this space. I don't like the idea of groups of players holding a specific knowledge, or "recipes", that they refuse to share with the other players on the site. On the wiki, I would rather keep the full disclosure policy, and if some groups still want their privacy, they can still have it on the EteRNA group page, if I'm not mistaken.

-- ElNando888 (talk) 18:46, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

Huh, very good point. I didn't think of it that way. I very much get where you're coming from, and now that you mention it, I definately agree. I wish there was an easier way to do group puzzles though. (EDIT: Forgot signature) LFP6 (talk) 22:56, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
